Thanks for responding so promptly.

I have transcripts from Montgomery County Clerk records (Vol. E, pg. 77)dated 18 January 1827 that gives an accounting of Alvin and Thomas (Jr)'s estates for the year - "appointing of us Francis Baker, Ashborn Davey & TW Atkinsin commissioners to settle with Joseph Shamwell as Guardian of Alvin & Thomas Blakeney"(Jr). It then goes on to list all expenses for the years 1824-1825, including money paid to Fred Blakeney (the oldest son) for room and board and clothing from Oct. 1823 thru Dec. 1826. So I am guessing that the boys were orphaned by Oct. 1823, and my Alvin would have been about 9 then.

Another accounting dated March 6, 1828 (Vol. E p. 286)states " it ordered that we John B. French Francis Baker and Edward A. Lucy be appointed Commissioners to settle with Joseph Shamwell Guardian of the Coloured children of Thomas Blakeney decs[sic] and make report to next term . . . " Then it goes on to list the expenses and receipts for 1827. Strangely, the document does not list Alvin by name, but does indicate payment received for hiring out several slaves, and they are named as Peter, Jo, George, Viny, Tinara, and Chuny. So even though he is not named, his slaves are.

Also, a small section at the bottom of this page indicates that Tobias Blakeney, the middle son, had a different guardian named David McMannus.

I am in the process of trying to obtain more documents and would be happy to share with you. I do have all the Wabash Co. IL records I could find - my family is from there and I have been to the courthouse and library to get what I could. I can trace from Alvin on down to me, but I know little about him or his wife Elizabeth Adams, other than her name. I am working on that too. Please email me at Thanks!
