It is seven years since you posted this and I am sure that you have discovered the book by now and know that it was 1792. But I just had to say that I grew up in London (I am over here to go to university in South Carolina) and as an Englishman and a Blakeney, I have always believed that there was more than a kernel of truth to the story of Sir Percy Blakeney, the Scarlet Pimpernel. I believe that there really was a Blakeney involved in rescuing aristos from the Reign of Terror in 1792.
