The family had already lost their six-year-old son, Frank, in 1888 (the year before moving to Sanilac County.) Within a three-week period in the winter of 1891 and 1892, diphtheria took the lives four more of their children. Seven-year-old William on December 27. a little over a week later, one-year-old Herman and three-year-old Henry died the same night. Julius, Charles and Lizzie had also contracted the disease, which claimed their oldest child, fifteen-year-old Julius on January 22. In less than a month, only two out of six children remained. The minister of the Evangelical Church at that time was single. He came over, and because the whole family was ill, he felt he should stay and care for them. Years later he wrote a letter telling how he had taken care of the bodies and ministered the family in need. The family was forced to store the bodies in the barn until graves could be dug in the spring. Henry and Herman, who had died the same night were stored and buried in the same coffin. Their daughter Mary who was born in the spring following this horrible winter, died in 1904 at the age of 12 of diabetes. After moving to Section 19, Grace and Esther were born. Of Charles and Caroline’s ten children, only four grew to adulthood: Charlie, Lizzie, Grace, and Esther.

When Caroline died in 1913, Grace, and Esther took care of the house for their father until they married. In 1915, the three of them took a trip visit relatives in Wisconsin. On the way they spent a week in Chicago visiting a cousin. They took the boat across lake Michigan on the way home. On Christmas day in 1922 Charles married Emelie Christiana (Emma) Gutekunst from Detroit. They moved into a very ornate house in by the grain elevator in Snover.
