My great-grandfather rode to Iowa on an orphan train in 1871. He had a tintype picture pinnned to his lapel with the name Joe Blank written on the back.
He would have originated from New York - although I have yet to find which orphanage. Research says many families were forced to give up kids (no money, sickness, death of mother).
Anyone with any ideas?
