Hi Don:
I believe you mentioned Rosenburg as origin for your Grandmother?Rosenburg was a town in West Prussia, about 50 km south of Gdansk, and I believe it also was a County/Province/district/etc.Rosenburg is only 8 or 10 kilometres SE of Riesenkirch (near Riesenburg) from which my relatives come.Gottfried Golembiewski emigrated about 1867 landing in New York, journeying to North Tonawanda, where his brother Jacob settled, and then moving north to settle in Canada in Ontario, Sullivan Township. The town in Ontario you mentioned would be Galt which is near Guelph, and would have been on the route you describe.Gottfried's sister, Caroline, married Michael Bluhm in Sullivan and raised 9 children. In 1889 the whole family moved to Oregon.Michael had three brothers, Gottfried, August and Frederick.I believe two of the three moved to Oregon as well, and their decendents have intermarried with Moehnke and Hoeft (Heft) families who also previously lived in Sullivan.
I have been recently corresponding with Marian Bluhm and Cheryl Robinette who live in Oregon and are both related to me and the Bluhms from Sullivan.I understand there is a Wilbur Bluhm living in Oregon who wrote a book about 20 years ago setting out the history of the Bluhm family.
From the pieces I have been able to put together about origins in West Prussia I am now pretty certain that the Bluhms came from the same general area as did my ancestors.I have obtained microfilm records for Riesenkirch which have made it possible for me to list about 160 family members who lived in West Prussia.I'm sure that continued research will show Bluhms in one or more nearby towns. One likely town is Marienwerder, which today is called Kwidzyn.
I hope some of this helps. There is little doubt that there is some sort of family connection between your Bluhms and mine.I hope we can discover what it is.
