Starting off with JosephBoast, a farmer, born 1745 at Sledemere Yorkshire.Married Jane Witty at Huggate May 23, 1768 in the first generation who had 11 kids.
Our line continues through John, son of Joseph and Jane Boast born 6 June 1768.John Boast married Elizabeth Lampley born July 13, 1788. They had 5 kids including David christened 1794 who married Elizabeth Bird, born in 1798 died in 1887.David was a Doctor and Elizabeth Bird’s father, a professor, was a highly regarded London surgeon. They had 5 kids including Dr Charles Bird Boast who also trained as a surgeon.
Dr Charles Bird Boast, son of David and Elizabeth, born 14 December 1818 at Newington Surrey, died 1897 buried at Yorke, Natal. He was also a cousin of Henry
Henry Boast, the promoter of the migration scheme from HULL to Durban who died of a brain storm on the eve the the Haidee was to set sail and was buried at sea.
Dr Charles Bird Boast starts the 4th generation. Dr Charles Bird Boast married Elizabeth Stormer born May 8, 1818, at Luton and died at Yorke, Natal, March 15, 1845.and produced 7 kids including a son also named Charles Bird Boast (confusing) from which my linage continues. His second wife was Catherine Jane Smith, daughter of William Smith and Isabella Cranswick, Widow, born 1839 and died 1929.Cranswicks came from Kirk Deighton in Yorkshire. There were five children from this marriage
Charles Bird Boast, (the son of Dr Charles Bird Boast) born at Bow, Middlesex,May 4, 1848 and died at Escort Natal 1929.He married Marion Leslie of Ladysmith, daughter of William Leslie. They had 5 kids who are my greats. They were Herbert Charles Boast, Ivan Boast and Sydney who I loved dearly and Wilfred Reginald Boast my grandfather who in never knew and Edith who I also never knew.
Ivan and Herbert, both were sugar planters outside Eshowe they had adjoining estates, Hilside Estate and Caneleas Estate on the Eshowe hills between Ginginglovo and Eshowe. Sydney, also a farmer, outside Escort in Natal.I knew Herbert and Ivan very well. They raised my father as his parents died while still at school at Kersney College. On leaving school, he returned to Herbert’s farm to master the science of sugar cane planting and the art of managing African labour. They were all fluent at zulu.
Dr Charles married a second time to Catherine Jane Smithand they had 5 kids. (I do know a Pat Smith from Kloof who traces back to this marriage and it is from her I got this tree- and it seems to have a bias essentially down the path of the second marriage). Anyway, U and I are interested essentially in the family derived with Elizabeth Stormer) AND your linage continues through another son of Dr Charles Bird Boast, Edwin Boast, born 1855 and died 1943 – a good innings. He had 7 kids including Minded Whitridge BOAST.
Most of this early stuff seems to be quite well documented in the Book “British Settlers in Natal 1824-1857 by Babs Bolton {This particular volume deals with surnames Babs to Bolton and is by Shelagh O’Byrne Spencer) and published by the University of Natal Press.I do not have a copy - they were out of print when I was last in South Africa. Another useful reference is the book written by Alan Hattersley, Professor of History, University of Natal, The British Settlement in Natal .
Anyway, My grandfather Wilfred Reginald Boast (1885-1944), Son of Charles Bird Boast and Marion Leslie, married Ernestina Hilda Godwin (1887-1946).They had 4 kids, Shirley Cedric, Pat and Barry who is my father.Shirley is the only survivor from this generation.
Wilfred my grand father, was a District Magistrate and spent most of his life in the Northern parts of Zululand at Inquavuma on the Swaziland/Zululand boarder, Ingomo and Eshowe, Bulwer and Greytown in the Natal Midlands. They had four children, Patricia born 1920 married Avro Randall in 1944 and they have a large egg farm outside Port Alfred supplying PE and East London.Children from this marriage include Jocelyn, John, Susan, and Hugh. Catherine Shirley born 1923 and married Thomas Sinclair David (was senior partner of Peats, Southern Africa) in Escort 1945 and have two children, Jennifer and Gregory, Cedric born 1916 and William Barry Boast born 1927 - my father who passed away in 1996and my mother a little earlier.
My father Barry, married Ruth Adelaide Godfrey of Mt Edgecombe, Natal. They produced me, Christopher Miles in 26 July 1949, Philippa Anne, 1952, Donald Mark in 1954 and Margaret Ruth in 1959, all still living in Natal. My father was a sugar cane planter and polo player and retired to Richmond, Natal.
I have a fairly detailed family tree going 8 generation starting with Joseph Boast and I would also be interested to know where U fit in with this tree. Also, I would be very interested to hear if you have any family detaild before Joseph Boast.U can also contact me at [email protected].
