Was Hugh BODKIN's wife, Hester, really a FARMER?
Many BODKIN/BOTKIN researchers assert that the wife of Hugh Bodkin, b. 1736, was Hester Farmer. But where is the evidence for this assertion?
It may be more likely that Hester was the daughter of Thomas Lorimer. The Will of Thomas Lorimer, which was proven in Augusta County, Virginia on 15 Nov 1768 (Will Book 3, page 105, see also page 92), provides Hugh Bodkin with 100 acres on the Blackthorn Creek, a tributary of the Bullpasture River, as well as horses, sheep, hogs "and all other worldly Goods that it heath pleas'd God to Blass me with". At that time, Hugh was also granted the administration of Thomas Lorimer's estate.
In her book titled "The Bodkin and Lorimer Ancestral Lines of Louise Kigar (Humphreys) Morrison, published 1987 and shelved in the Library of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, DC, Louise Morrison
makes a strong argument that Thomas Lorimer left "all he owned to his son-in-law, Hugh Bodkin, who married Thomas Lorimer's daughter, Esther Lorimer, about 1760. Esther must have been Thomas Lorimer's only child or
others would have been mentioned in the will and bequeathed at least a token legacy. Hugh and Esther (Lorimer) Bodkin were apparently living on the land Thomas Lorimer homesteaded, the young couple doubtless giving the older man a home with them for his lifetime."
