Starting in 2002, a Y-DNA surname project was initiated for male (agnatic) descendants of Jacob Boehme (1693-1781) of Lancaster Co., PA and his male relatives. This Y-DNA surname project is being conducted by Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com) of Houston, TX. The goal of the study is to identify descendants of Jacob Boehme (1693-1781), his probable brother, Rudolph Boehm (of Lancaster, Co., PA), and other Boehm/Beam/Beahm families who might be related, e.g. Samuel Boehm of Shenandoah Co., VA., whether or not source records exist to confirm the relationships.
Thus far, only seven males have particpated. At least one descendant from each branch of the Pennsylvania, Canada, and Virginia families have been tested to date and the Y-DNA results confirm that all of these families are related. A probable descendant of Rudolph Boehm has also been tested and he is also related based on Y-DNA comparisons. A couple of other males with the surname of Boehm, Beam, Beahm, etc. have been tested and they do not appear to be related.
For anyone interested in participating in this project, the current costs are:
Y-DNA 12 Marker Test: $159. ($99. for members of the surname project)
Y-DNAPlus 25 Marker Test: $229. ($169. for members of the surname project)
The Y-DNA test kit is delivered by mail and is self-administered. DNA fragments from a buccal smear (swab on the inside of the mouth) are collected to determine the Most Recent Common Ancestor. The Y-DNA samples are compared to those already in the database and if they match on 12 Y-DNA markers, then there is a 50% probability of a common ancestor within the past 14 generations (about 350 years). For a 25 Y-DNA marker match, there is a 50% probability of a common ancestor within the past 7 generations.
