Jean Bois of Canada c.1845
Does anyone know of the existance and/or whereabouts of the descendants of Jean Bois, who emigrated from Jersey (Channel Islands - Iles Anglo-Normandes) to Canada before 30.4.1895.He was born in the Island of Jersey 23.5.1845, the 5th son and 6th child of François Bois and Nancy Fauvel (the former a refugee as a child from continental Normandy, the latter a Jerseywoman of a St. Saviour's/St. Martin's family)and he married Jane Mourant of Jersey. They emigrated to Canada in 1895 and had two sons there, John Francis Philip Bois (b. 25.10.1872, d.23.12.1872 -s.p.) and John Mourant Bois (b. 7.3.1875).The last of these was in contact with the Jersey family up to the 1920's or 30's and may have had a daughter (as far as I recall, or possibly sons?). Contact was certainly lost by WW2 and this branch of the family may be extinct (or not?). I am not sure if they lived in Montreal or Quebec, but I am fairly certain it was in the French-speaking east, although any descendants could be in other provinces. Jean Bois' first language would have been French or possibly Jèrriais (Jersey-Norman-French), but he would have been familar with and competant in English, which is today the dominant language in the Island, but which was then a new and minority language.Jersey people tended to go to Montreal and Quebec (sometimes after a time in Gaspé, although not in this case).
