My info comes from Dawes Comm. applications too.
Affidavits of some of the older folks leaves me wondering because they use Indian names and nick names.
Did you ever get it straight?
I am looking for connection to my GGF William Henry 'Bill' Boles b. abt 1847 - could be son of another William and that William could be son of Charles.
So I am looking for a Boles connection before 1850.
While I suspect GGF's Indian heritage, his wife Malinda C. Lindley (once thought to be Finley) was known full blood with MO ties. (Tribe unknown: Cherokee and Creek likely).
Found 7 Chief Boles/Bowles - most had made it west before GGF's birth in AL.The oldest Chief from the old carolina area held the most promise.I must not be Indian (LOL) because these folks are hard to track.Apparently, the best way to research is to know a tribe member with a computer and passwords. They have a DNA library too!
Cherokee Nation has become progressively more protective of tribe membership. In past 10 years, have purged tribe roll members through Constitutional Amendment of Cherokee Constitution as late as 2011. Primarily this heavily affected black members that intermarried and/or were slaves before the Trail of Tears - expelled after 100-150 years! How sad is that? The new Chief pushed the legislation and swung a heavy tomahawk. More expulsions can be expected.
I see support for both sides.New Chief is trying to protect tribe resources for future generations. With global economic chaos - things will only get worse. Maybe new Chief is visionary or securing future voters support.Politics and money stike again?
The way I understand it - right or wrong - a Boles man came from England (Irish ?) 1st landed in PA early 1700's and soon made his way to lower colonies (carolinas and VA were still arguing and amending state lines). He assimilated into the Indians and married with many children. One of his prodigy became the first Chief Boles/Bowles.
The Boles from PA children went everywhere but back to England/Ireland.
William Augustus Bowles (1763–1805), also known as Estajoca, adds a new slant in this time frame.wikipedia.com has short bio - few seem to know about him.Having read book on him, wiki bio will serve you well instead. Book is s/w high adventure reading.
Early Chief Boles/Bowles - seem to have adopted the name in respect for WAB rather than true bloodline. WAB's only true surviving son is recorded as going to England and never returning to USA.
Trying to give you clues - my search continues too.
