In Reply to: Sidney Valentine Booth, Cabell County West Virginia by Troy Glenn Dillon of 5168

According to his death certificate, Sidney Valentine Booth was born 13 March 1865 in Mason county, West Virginia, and died 10 October 1950 at Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia. His parents were James Booth and Mary Goodall. The death certificate is here: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=1984147&ImageNumber=628

His actual birth record says that he was born on 15 March 1865 and lists his parents as James and Mary Margaret Boothe. The birth record is here: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=1855007&ImageNumber=184

The marriage record for James and Mary implies that she was Mary M. (Goodall) Workman; it does not indicate whether she was widowed or divorced. The marriage record is here: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=12177853&Type=Marriage

Sidney was one of several children. In the 1870 census of Clendennin, Mason, West Virginia, he had 4 sisters:
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Jas W Booth M 34y Virginia
Mary M Booth F 32y Virginia
Lavena Workman F 11y Virginia
Clarra C Workman F 9y Virginia
Sidney V Booth M 5y West Virginia
Sarah A Booth F 4y West Virginia
Mary A Booth F 6m West Virginia
The census record is here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MZ4P-CFH

The only other time a Sidney Booth of the right age appears in the West Virginia census records, is the 1900 census of ED 57 Hannan district (north side), Mason, West Virginia. I'm not sure this is him though, because the census gives this man's birth date as September 1865, and both the birth and death records for "your" Sidney indicate that he was born in March 1865. However, this is the record in the 1900 census:
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Head Sidney Booth M 35 West Virginia
Wife Fanny Booth F 33 West Virginia
Daughter Iva Booth F 9 West Virginia
Son Jessey Booth M 8 West Virginia
Son John P Booth M 6 West Virginia
Son Homer J Booth M 4 West Virginia
Son James B Booth M 3 West Virginia
Daughter Mary R Booth F 2 West Virginia
The record is here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9C1-PVF

He does show up in the 1940 census of Ward 9, Huntington, Gideon Magisterial District, Cabell, West Virginia, with wife Fay Booth and your new-born Grandfather, however in this census, he says that he was born in Ohio:
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Head Sydney Booth M 75 Ohio
Wife Fay Booth F 18 West Virginia
Son Charles Booth M 0 West Virginia
Son Arnold Booth M 33 West Virginia
The 1940 census record is here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K7HB-H96

Regarding James Booth's parents: based on the 1870 census when James Booth was 34 and born in Virginia, he should have been born around 1836 (give or take acouple of years. Age was rather fluid in the 19th century censuses).

Harrison Booth and Charlotte Yates were supposedly married on 21 April 1846 in Floyd county, Kentucky (I haven't seen the source of this date, but found it in an on-line Pedigree Resource File at www.familysearch.org. The file is at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/SPJ1-T94). According to the 1860 census of Floyd county, Kentucky, Harrison and Charlotte's oldest child was James R. Boothe, born approximately 1847, so ten years younger than the man who married Mary Margaret Goodall and fathered Sidney Booth.
