Tom, forgive the maze of information -- it's not very organized (yet). I have info from boards.rootsweb.com that addresses Thomas Boswell on the Defence. Go to that website, search "Gloucester" under Message Boards and choose Virginia-Counties-Gloucester. Search "Defence" within that message board and you'll find the posting. You'll see this person claims "...the Defence of London was a ship that frequently made its way to New England, including Boston. This date would fill a gap when the Defence would have made its way to Virginia..."
I haven't been able to find from where Thomas came. I'm eager to do so, because I really want to know what prompted him to come over. There's a strong preponderance on my Boswell line for certain values and it appears to go back to the very first Virginia Boswells.
I'm trying to verify my link to Thomas Boswell. George Boswell (verified link, g-g-g-g grandfather), b. 1745 in Ware Parish (Gloucester County) is no doubt a direct descendant of Thomas Boswell, who was granted 972 acres on Ware Neck (still York County at that point). I just haven't been able to verify the link conclusively. Probably George Boswell was son to Joseph Colgate Boswell and Elizabeth Elliott (m. 1753 in Amelia County, I think). Joseph Colgate Boswell-John Boswell II-John Boswell I-Thomas Boswell (b.1632 Ware Neck)-Thomas Boswell (b.1615 England?). Something like that.
Let me know what else you find. I'm using software called GenoPro to build my genealogy, and I've posted a 2-year old file on the web. But I have to update it.
