PORTLAND - Richard Gordon Botkin Sr., 91, of Deering Pavilion, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 23, 2005 at Mercy Hospital.

He was born in Kansas City, Mo., on March 12, 1913 the son of Norval and Zetta (Gordon) Botkin. He attended Limington schools and graduated from Limington Academy.

Gordon married Dorothy Lyle Holmes on June 26, 1937 in Portland, and together they had four children. They were married 59 years when she died in 1996.

Gordon worked for Beal Furniture in the 1930s and for two years at Quaddy Village and Eastport where he taught the craft of boat building. He also taught Industrial Arts at North Anson Academy. He worked as a heating & refrigeration engineer in the greater Portland area and retired from Pineland Hospital in 1978.

Gordon was a lifelong artist and craftsman and was a member of the United Maine Craftsmen. He will be remembered as a gentleman with a friendly and open nature. While at Pineland he took a sign language course to enable himself to speak to residents there because he truly wanted to be a friend to all. Most of all, Gordon loved his family.

He is survived by his four children, Edgar D. Botkin and his wife Carol of Carefree, Ariz., Dorothy Mathes of Yarmouth, Richard G. Botkin Jr. and his wife Sarah of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Deborah J. Botkin of Gray; three grandchildren, Frederic Olsen, Elizabeth Bell, and Russell Mathes; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress St., Portland, on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Lawrence Gilbert officiating. Internment will be in Blanchard Cemetery in Falmouth this spring.
