Back in the summer of 1986 I spent several weeks in London and Counties Essex and Suffolk looking for the English origin of James BOWTELL of Massachusetts. At that time I made the connection to the James who was married and had two children in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire.
I also looked into the James BOWTELL who was the son of James BOWTELL and Sarah WHITE, and concluded that this must be another person. In particular, the parish records of Shalford give
James, son of James & Sara BOWTELL, bp. Feb. 25, 1616/7
In Robert WHITE's will, dated May 27, 1617, he named his "eldest daughter Sarah, the wife of James BOWTELL of little Salinge" and "Jeames BOWTELL the younger, son of my said daughter Sarah."James, Jr., was only three months old at the time.
Also from Shalford we have
Sara, wife of James BOWTELL, bur. Aug. 1, 1626
From parish records at Little (or Bardfield) Saling we have
James, son of James BOWTELL, bp. Nov. 13, 1610
James ("Jacobus") BOWTOLL of Shalford and Catharine THORNE of Little Saling m. Mar. 13, 1626/7 by license
and from parish records of Messing we have
James, child & son of _____ BOWTLE of Shalford, bur. Jul. 26, 1616
So, it looks like the first James, Jr., died young. And from the following records from Shalford it looks like the second James, Jr., stayed there:
Elizabeth, dau. of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Feb. 27, 1639/40
Sara, dau. of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Jun. 17, 1641
Mary, dau. of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Oct. 10, 1643
Anna, dau. of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Sep. 30, 1647
Dorcas, dau. of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Jan. 27, 1649/50
James, son of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Jan. 4, 1652/3
William, son of James & Elizabeth BOWTELL, bp. Apr. 29, 1662
Also at Shalford are the following burial records:
Elizabeth, wife of James BOWTELL, bur. Oct. 10, 1643
Dorcas BOWTELL, bur. Sep. 21, 1680
Mr. James BOWTELL, bur. Nov. 12, 1685
So, it looks like James, Jr., had two wives named Elizabeth, and the first one died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. Also, there is a will for James BOWTELL, Sr., of Shalford, dated Oct 30, 1685, that names several of the children listed above. One of the witnesses to the will was a John WHITE.
All this, and more, is in a paper "Searching for the English Origin of James Bowtell of Salem and Lynn" that I put together back in 1986.A follow-on piece is still in incomplete draft form.
