Kim,
Could you tell me the date of your source(s) for the information on Jacob Bowman, Sr.?I have copies of Emmert Bittinger's 3-article series that appeared in the Mennonite Family History journal in 1997 and 1998, and his information differs considerably from what you cite. Is there newer research that refutes those articles? They appear to be extremely well researched and documented.
From these articles:
Jacob Bowman, Sr. married (1) Varena (Last Name Unknown), (2) Barbara (LNU) (3) Catherine Wine, widow of Christopher Steele. The last article "Descendants of Jacob Bowman, Sr., and his wives Varena and Catherine, Part III" starts with this paragraph:
"Jacob had three wives, Varena, Barbar, and Catherine (Wine) Steele. Most of his children were born of Varena.None are known from Barbara, and only one, Frances, was born of Catherine."(parenthese from the original article)
Jacob Bowman, Jr.'s widow, Susannah, moved their family to the land that he had purchased in TN, which was located in Washington Co., not Johnson Co.She married Isaac Hammer 11 Aug 1795 Rockingham Co, VA; there were no children from this marriage.
Jacob Bowman, Jr. and Susannah had a son named Jacob Bowman (III) who married Mary Saufley. They also had a son named John Jacob Bowman b. 13 apr 1773 d. 3 apr 1843; he is the one who married Eve Elizabeth Steele. They both died in Washington Co, TN.Eve Elizabeth was born 1779 and her father's will was written 1782, so he could not have been the Christopher Steele who officiated at their marriage.
John Jacob Bowman and Eve Elizabeth Steele were my 3G-grandparents.I am also descended from Catherine Wine Steele Bowman's brother, Michael.John Jacob and Eve Elizabeth (Steele) Bowman's granddaughter, Elizabeth, married Jacob Wine, great-nephew of Catherine Wine Steele Bowman.Jacob Wine and Elizabeth Bowman were my G-grandparents.
