Robert Box (1789-1858) was a probable son of Robert Box, Jr. and his wife, Jane Goodwin. He was a man of influence in Hardeman Co. TN. In an article from the 1889 Bolivar Bulletin entitled: “Old times in Hardeman County; Brief Sketches of some of the Men who figured in her history 66 years ago” there was this:
"We have been furnished by Gen. R.P. Neely with a list of the 1st magistrates ever qualified for Hardeman County. They were appointed by Gov. Carroll in 1823 and are as follows:
Elisha W. Boyett, Jno. Reagan, John Rosson, Robert Box, William Polk, Stephen Bennett, John Y. Cockrum, Andrew Taylor, Jacob Pirtle and John H. Bills. These were noble old gentlemen who have left their stamp upon the country and their descendants have filled many of the most important offices.
Major Robert Box a man of intelligence and means settled at head of Piney Creek where Esq Rush now lives. Afterwards he moved to Miss upon the removal of the Chickasaw Indians to the heart of the Mississippi River."

However, he has often been confused with his cousin, Robert Box (1785-1856), the son of Abraham Box and husband of Patsy Mitchell, who also lived in Hardeman Co. and who was the Robert Box who moved to Tippah Co. MS in the early 1830's and the newspaper article acknowledging his accomplishments, apparently confused the two men. Ophelia Wade also confused the two Roberts in her book on the Box family.

In the Will of Robert Box Jr. dated May 7, 1821 and probated in Franklin Co. TN, the sons of Robert Box Jr. are named as John, Robert , George, James, Micajah, Goodwin and Neely. John, Robert and Goodwin are enumerated as neighbors in the 1830 Census of Hardeman Co. TN. That Robert Box appears in the census as a widower age 40-50 with 5 boys and 4 girls in his household. In the 1850 Census of Hardeman Co., he (age 62 and born in South Carolina) and his second wife, Edney, are with their 5 daughters: Sabra, Caroline, Narcissa, Susan and Manerva along with Tamer, a daughter by his first wife, Sarah whose maiden name we do not know. The other children of Robert and his first wife appear to be: Jane, Molly, Elisabeth, Stephen, James, Joshua, George and Robert .
Robert Box died January 16, 1858 and his wife, Edney, died November 25, 1873 and both are buried in Old Enon Primitive Baptist Cemetery near Middleton, Hardeman Co., TN.
