The Will of John Box of Laurens Co. S.C.
Posted by: Joseph Fox (ID *****3715) Date: August 15, 2008 at 14:56:28
  of 2302

John Box of Laurens Co. S. C. wrote his will 22 Nov. 1815 and had it witnessed by William Arnold, Robert Nabors and Joseph M. Ewens. In his will, he essentially gave his wife, Rachel, a life estate on their 100 acres that was bounded by lands of Samuel Nabors, Jane Moore and the Reedy River. Upon the death of his wife, the 100 acres would be given to Rachel Box and Luisa Box, daughters of Jemima Box. He also indicated his daughter, Jemima Snied, could live on his land as long as she desired and upon the death of his wife, Rachel, all his stock, farming tools, household and kitchen furniture would go to her. Also upon the death of his wife, Rachel, the Negro named Charity was to be sold on credit of twelve months and the proceeds be divided as follows: Elisha Williamson, his grandson, to receive $50; Shadrack Box, his son, to receive $5; Robert Box, his son, to receive $5;and the rest of the proceeds to be divided equally by his sons, Abraham Box and Benjamin Box, and his daughters, Molly South, Rachel Banks, and Jemima Sneed.
He appointed and nominated his friend, Elisha Williamson, as executor of his last will and testament.
The will was proven 5 Feb. 1821.
There are a number of other documents that help interpret the will. There were two deeds written 31 Oct. 1807 where John Box, Sr, sold two tracts that were parts of an original land grant of Robert Box (Sr.). And there was a deed showing John Box Jr. had 162 acres on the branches of Raburn Creek in Laurens Co. in 1804. These documents indicate John Box Sr. had a son, John Box, Jr. who did not appear on his will written in 1815 . This seems to indicate Jemima Box, mother of Rachel Box and Luisa Box, was the wife of John Box, Jr. who was probably deceased. The inclusion of Elisha Williamson in the will as his grandson seems to indicate John and Rachel Box had a deceased daughter that had married a Williamson. There was a deed dated 5 May 1828 in which Rachel Box (widow of John Box) sold 150 acres on Reedy River to John Williamson who was probably her son-in-law. Two years later on 28 December 1830, Rachel Box and Louisa Box, granddaughters of John Box, had their attorney sell the 100 acres on Reedy River they inherited from John Box to Elisha Williamson who was obviously their 1st cousin. The sale of this land indicated Rachel Box, widow of John Box, Sr. was deceased and her daughter, Jemima Sneed was either deceased or no longer wanted to live on her fatherís land.
If these assumptions are correct, John Box Sr. and his wife Rachel were parents of 5 boys, John Jr., Shadrack, Robert, Abraham and Benjamin; and 4 daughters, Molly South, Rachel Banks, Jemima Sneed and a daughter whose name we do not know who married a Williamson. The Elisha Williamson, Executor of John Box, Sr.ís Will was probably the paternal grandfather of Elisha Williamson, grandson of John Box, Sr.
