John Box 1795-1800 NC, Brother William Box.1805 SC, Both Moved From SC to Southe

John and William Box, brothers according to Judge Huxford of the Huxford Library in Homerville, GA (I have a copy of his research sheets), moved to southern Georgia by 1840. They lived in the same area separated by the county line between Lowndes and Ware. This area was later incorporated into the new county of Clinch. Members of their families resided near each other through subsequent decades. Most moved to northern Florida after the Civil War. I can provide additional details and reference information if requested. I would like to find an indication of who their parents were and how they may relate to the other Boxes in and around Laurens County, SC. I have thought it reasonable that one of John’s and William’s son’s names and/or their own might reflect their father, perhaps especially the names of John, William, and Joseph.

John Box, b. bet. 1795-1800 NC, lived in SC, moved to Lowndes County GA in mid-late 1830s, d. bef. 1870 in Clinch County, GA. Married Nancy Rice, b. SC (possibly part of Rice family in Barnwell County) abt. 1803 or 1805. Their children:
Hansford, b. abt. 1820 SC (Probably same as a Joseph H. Box in 1860. A Hansford is in Camden County, GA 1880, age of 66, b. 1814. If same man, which I think, and if this age is closer to his actual birth year, he may more aptly be considered a younger brother of John in spite of Huxford’s record.)
John S. (don’t know what initial stands for), b. abt. 1830 SC (my ancestor)
Sarah, b. abt. 1831 SC (LDS has her b. in Barnwell County but no documentation of that)
       Lucy, b. abt. 1832 SC
       William, b. abt. 1836 or 1838 GA
       Rachel, b. abt. 1840 or 1842 GA
Note on John: The Huxford Library research sheets on these Box families have John Box's middle initial as "C." I do not know what it stands for. He applied for bounty land (of which I have a copy) for his service in the Seminole Indian wars but was not approved for inconsistencies in the signing of his name and stated age: having variously signed with his mark and written out his name and listed his age differently in documents. In 1855 his attorney replied that he was an uneducated man and could only sign his name with difficulty and so sometimes used his mark. He stated that John did not know how old he was but thought that he might be 55 or 56 (in 1855); thus born around 1799 or 1800. I wonder if William and maybe Hansford did not know exactly when they were born either.

Note on Barnwell County, SC: Nancy Rice may be the daughter of John and Nancy Rice who resided nearby in Ware County, GA in 1850. John Rice was apparently a son of Aaron Rice who lived in Barnwell County, SC. The LDS site has Sarah Box birth in Barnwell County but as typical for the site, there is no documentation of that. Historically, Lowndes County, GA and surrounding area was settled by many people from Barnwell County, SC. The name of “Hansford” seems distinctive in this context and coincidentally or not, I must note that there was a well-known minister in Barnwell by the name of Hansford Duncan. I have looked at every page of the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Barnwell County and there is no family name even remotely resonant of Box.

William Box, b. abt. 1803 or 1805 SC, moved to Ware County, GA by 1840, residence became Clinch County, GA by 1860, d. aft. 1870 Columbia County, FL. Married Thaney Unknown, b. abt 1814 SC. Subsequent names of wife for William were Tuma and Zain. Their children:
Richard, b. abt. 1828 SC, d. probably during Civil War
Joseph, b. abt. 1832 SC, d. Frederick, MD 1862 (of wounds in battle)
       Caroline, b. abt. 1839 SC
       John, b. abt. 1840 GA
Allen, b. abt. 1842 GA, d. 1916 Charlton County, GA
       Martha, b. abt. 1846 or 1843 GA
Fanny or Wealthy A., b. abt. 1850 GA
