Key words: Chevening / Kent / Avalanche / Waitara / Tutty's Hotel / New Plymouth / Taranaki / New Zealand.
I would love to hear from anyone who can tell me more about GEORGE BOX / his family / his story.
FamilySearch M130982 lists the marriage of George’s parents:
John BOX & Eliza SPICKET on 14 June 1846, at Chevening, near Sevenoaks, (north of Tonbridge). Kent.
FamilySearch C130982 lists christenings of the couple’s four sons at Chevening:
Reuben BOX chr about 13 Apr 1851
John BOX chr 6 Jun 1852
James BOX chr 13 Aug 1854
George BOX chr 21 Oct 1855.
The Taranaki Herald, 23 Jan 1875,page 2, has a long article about the “Arrival of the ship Avalanche” which lists a George H. Box among the 260 passengers. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz
“NZ Immigrants of the 1870s” (*Fascinating article!) http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-ArnFart-c11.html
quotes the Kent & SussexTimes, 24 September 1875: “George Box, a 20-year-old labourer, recently arrived in Taranaki, wrote home exuberantly of the joys of hunting wild boars and cattle in the New Zealand bush.”
PukeAriki passenger lists have a Mr Box departing Waitara on the “Rowena” 27 Feb 1880, destination Manukau.
I am uncertain that this is our George Box, but it could be him returning to England after spending five years in Taranaki, or could be George’s brother, or some unrelated Box.
The Taranaki Herald 11 Jun 1883, in a column about a fire at Waitara, when Tutty’s Hotel burnt down, comments that “Mr George Box, who has been manager for Mr Tutty for several years, is also a heavy loser, he having accumulated a large number of Maori curiosities for the purpose of taking home to the old country”.
The Taranaki Herald 22 Oct 1889, has a bankruptcy report about George H. Box, publican, who stated he had “lived at Waitara altogether for about 12 years”. The same article mentions that George’s wife (?) & George’s brother (which brother- Reuben? John? James?) had been helping run the pub.
Knowing that he originally arrived NZ in Jan 1875, we can calculate that George Box must have spent about two years back in England.
I do not know if George Box died in New Zealnd or returned permanently to England.
