Confusion of John Boxes
Posted by: Joseph Fox (ID *****3715) Date: February 24, 2009 at 07:28:05
  of 2302

Two land deeds in Laurens Co. SC dated Nov. 31, 1807 in which John Box Senr. transferred tracts of land that were part of an original land grant of Robert Box (b. abt 1734) were used by Ophelia Wade on page 31 of her book, The Box Book with McElroy and Floyd, to establish John Morris Box as a son of Robert and Mary Williams Box. She interpreted the reference to John Box Senr. and his wife Rachel to refer to John Morris Box b. abt 1780 and his wife Rachel Banks Box. However, John Morris Box was not a John Box Senr. That designation fit John Box b. bef. 1744 who also had a wife, Rachel.

John Morris Box and his wife Rachel did have a son named John Asbury Box, b. 11 Jan 1805 in SC. However, the different middle name would not have made his dad John Senr. And the John Box Jr. found in the Laurens Co., South Carolina deed records in 1804 preceded the birth of John Asbury Box.

This interpretation of the Will of John Box suggests John and Rachel Box did have a son, John Box, Jr. who died before the will was written.

The pertinent land records are:

J 41 10/31/1807 11/18/1808. John Box, Senr. to Zechariah Arnold for $400, 75 a. orig. gr. to Robert Box, on w. side Reedy R. Wit: W. Downs, Wm. Moore. D.R. of Rachel (x) Box. Jonthn. Downs, J.Q.

J 77 10/31/1807 4/21/1809. John (X) Box, Senr. to Wm. Moore for $400, 75 a. orig. gr. to Robt. Box, e. side Reedy R. Wit: W. Downs, Zachariah Arnold, D.R. of Rachel (x) Box, Jonthn. Downs, J.Q.

11/28/1804. Box, John Jr., Plat for 162 acres on branches of Raburns Creek, Laurens District, surveyed by John Rodgers, bordered by Boyd, William; Cole, Solomon

This does not indicate John Morris Box was not a son of Robert and Mary Williams Box nor does it indicate John Box, Senr. was their son. On the other hand, it is unlikely John Box, Senr. was a son of Robert and Mary Williams Box.

When Robert Box petitioned on July 4 1755 for a land grant, he stated he had a wife and child and he later that year received the land grant of 150 acres in what would become Laurens Co. Ten years later, in 1765, John Box also received a land grant of 150 acres in what would become Laurens Co. thus indicating he was at least 21 years of age and therefore not likely a son of Robert and Mary Williams Box.
