Our Mary Jane Box, born 1828, TN. Family records state she died in home of brother, Allen Box, after giving birth to her first child, Andrew Jackson Peppers, born 1858. Family notes state her brother was plantation owner, Humphreys, TN. Mary’s husband, Daniel Peppers (Jr), was absentee father. “Carter” raised Andrew, in Humphreys, TN - Duck River Bottom.
1860 US Census, Humphrey’s, TN, confirm account, with Allen and Thersa/Theresa Carter , Humphreys, TN, raising Andrew Jackson Peppers , age 2.
Also, confirming family notes, this census shows Allen Carter’s next door neighbors are Allen Box, born 1801 S. Carolina, with his family Henry and Moses Box. Next door are Robert Carter, born 1808 and family, as well as neighbor Thomas Carter, born 1826 and family.
Andrew was found again, age 12, in 1870 US Census, still with Allen Carter, in Humphreys, TN. Allen Carter, born 1800 N.Carolina.
Researched Box family group matches Box grouping on Carter Family Tree at Ancestry.com. I thought I’d found our Mary Box’s parents with extended family. Problem: the only listed Mary Box was born 1848, daughter of, John Box, born 1823, brother to Allen Box – sons of Moses Box and Nancy Clementine. Our Mary Jane’s birth date of 1828 is given in 1850 US Census, Hickman, TN. Even if birth date, in 1950 census was wrong, though it appears to be likely correct, a birth year of 1847 or 1848, as given for John Box’s daughter, would have made her 10 or 11 years old at the time of her son, Andrew’s confirmed birth of 1858. Not possible.
Could there have been a daughter born to Moses and Nancy after their younger children John and Moses, Jr? Our Mary’s age is just a few years younger than John and Moses, Jr. How do the Carters connect to the Box family? All life aspects for her are confirmed but the age of our Mary shows she cannot be the only listed Mary in this Box family grouping? Any added information would be very appreciated.
