Trigg County Civil War Historical Data:
William H. Braboy was one of the persons to enlist in one of the first companies, if not the first company, organized in Trigg County by Dr. J. L. Trice of Canton. With others, he was mustered in as Company "G" of the 4th Kentucky Regiment, Confederate Infantry. He was wounded at Shiloh on 06 Apr 1862. **The 4th was engaged in many conflicts, another one mentioning William Braboy follows**
After a battle at Hattsville, Tennessee in December 1862 where 2000 Federal prisoners were taken, the 4th was put in charge of the captured prisoners and carried them to Murfreesboro. When the Federal Army was marching on Murfreesboro, the 4th Regiment was ordered on the front line and Company G, the Trigg County Company was put in the very front and the fearful battle of "Stone River" was fought with Breckenridge's brigade being ordered into what was afterwards called the "slaughter pen" so called because he lost more men from his brigade than was lost from all the rest of the army as they charged across an open field against a large number of Federals concealed in a cedar thicket.
At the beginning of this battle, Lt. R. W. Major was ordered to dislodge the enemy from a house near the river bank. Taking H. D. Wallace and William Braboy with him, he crept along under the river bank until within a short distant of the house and then at a given signal (the firing of a shell into the building) he rushed with his comrades to the house. Capt. Trice with the balance of the company and Capt. Utterback's company from Calloway County dashed forward upon the buildings from the front and the emeny being quickly driven out, Lt. Major rushed in and set fire to the house. In this charge on the house Capt. Utterback was killed and the rest of the men retreated in a perfect hail of bullets.
