Question on George BRASIL D'cd 1696
Troubling news indeed.....seems the forum boards at Rootsweb are either very disfunctional or the administrators of the boards are censoring postings as this is not the first time that I have not been able to post on Rootsweb and there are others as well.
So I am posting on Genforum because my posts seem to go through on this board....anyway, this is what I was trying to post on the Rootsweb Braswell forum boards below:
I have a question:
Who is:
George BRASIL, who's estate inventory was taken 1696 CHOWAN Prec. (at this date was in VA territory, but soon after 1700 NC territory) dated FEB 2, 1696 and appraised by THOMAS GARRETT, EDWARD SMITHWICK, THOMAS GILYAM (GWILLIAM I think it's also spelled and GILLIAM), with NAT. CHEVIN as clerk.
Anybody know who this guy is because there is a WILLIAM BRAPWELL (could be BRASSWELL as the P may be the double S symbol) in this CHOWAN prec. Area where a NATH CHEVEN is clerk in 1715.....see doc transcript below:
COLONIAL RECORDS: Records of the Executive Council minutes 1715
"Wherefore it is hereby ordered that the Thos. Spights at the horsepool and WM BRAPWELL on the West Shoare of Chowan and Thos. William <118> and James BROWN at CORATUCK or either of them are hereby appointed to receive all such persons that are brought in from Virginia as aforesaid and deliver of to them and that they immediately on receipt of such persons doe cause them to pay into such officer or officers as shall bring them in 20/ each man and carry them before the next magistrate who is hereby required to commit such persons to the custody of the Marshall or his Deputy until they shall find good and sufficient security for their appearance at the next General Court then following to answer to such matters as shall be objected against them.................... ...................Sept. 18th 1715 present the Honorable Charles EDEN Esqr. Governor Captain General and Admirall. The Honorable NATH CHEVIN................................."
This William Braswell is the William who got into a fight with a Richard Washington. There were others involved in the assault against Richard Washington alongside Wm Braswell. Since William Braswell paid 20 pounds "owed" to the King and found guilty of assault against Richard Washington I do think this Wm BRAPWELL transcription story is the same person.
So my question is: With this William showing up during a time when the clerk of court was still NATH CHEVIN in 1715 and the George BRASIL showing up in the same CHOWAN Prec. With the same clerk of court NAT CHEVIN in 1696.....
Could this William Braswell be related to that George BRASIL D'cd 1696 in the SAME AREA......remember that in 1696 this Chowan area was a part of VA territory, but by the time that William is recorded in records it is in NC territory. There are George Braswells that emerge in the NC area just after that period in time.
Any thoughts, especially with that GWILLIAM (GILLIAM, GILLIAN, GYLLIAM) surname found with on the George Brasil estate??
Thanks,
Kay
