I am searching for some confirmation about a boy that was taken by Chief Blackhawk's tribe in Rock Island County Illinois. I have a Hawkins Pony rifle that was passed on to me by my father with the following story. The boy was taken when very young. Joseph came to Illinois when a year old. He supposedly came back several times to see the family but always returned to the Indians. At the start of the Civil War, he came through on his way to enlist as a scout and left this rifle with the family. He never returned. I have pretty reliable information that the rifle dates to the 1830's or 40's. This boy would be my great-great uncle and son of Stephen and Catherine Coleman Brayton. Stephen's son John was my great-great gradfather.
If anyone has information about this, I woudl sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance for the effort.
