WESTMEATH, Mac BRAOIN FROM THE BARONY OF KNOCKTOPHER, CO.L KILKENNY.AFTER THE ANGLO-NORMAN INVASIONS 12 & 13 A.D. THE SEPTS WERE ANGLICIZED TO BREEN.THE BREEN MOTTO IS COMHRAC AN CEART (Fight for Right)FAMOUS BREEN'S WERE: Tighearnach O Braoin of Clonmacnoise, Bishop Donal O'Breen in the middle ages.
Dan Breen was one of the most prominent fighters during the War of Independence 1916-1921 when Ireland won it's independence from Briton. This did not free Northern Ireland.THE BREEN NAME WAS DISGUISED UNDER THE ALIAS O'BRIEN. Infamous was Jemmy O'Brien of Thomond.The O BREEN'S BECAME BRUEN IN CO. ROSCOMMON AND BROWNE IN CO. MAYO.wILLIAM BROWNE (1777-1857) of Foxford was a famous Argentine Admiral and was from the Connacht O Breen's.Henry H. Breen was a famous poet from Co. Kerry (1805-1882)
Francis Breen (1778) a famous rebel from Co. Wexford.The Abbot Tighearnach O Braoin died in 1088. Donal O"Breen was Bishop of Clonmacnois from 1303 to 1324. Elizabeth Breen was a famous Irish Nun who was arrested in France in 1793 during The Terror. Most Breen's have heard of Patrick Breen who died in 1808 who wrote the diary about the Donner exploration party disaster.Dan Breen is the most recent famous BREEN that we know of.Does anyone else know of some more recent famous Breen's?The Breen name means "Sorrow".
