Harry,
I am trying to trace my Brannan family. The birthplace of Charles Brannan is believed to have been Shallogan More, in County Donegal, Ireland. It is stated as such on his tombstone.
In an undated obituary from the Darlington, Wisconsin DEMOCRAT, Charles is reported to have been born in 1814 in Donegal, Ireland. The article states he came to Pennsylvania in 1848, and then to Gratiot, Wisconsin in 1866, where he lived until his death. His wife was Margaret Mary Kennedy.
He is believed to be a son of Andrew and Mary (maiden name no known) Brannan.Andrew is believed to have been born in 1790 in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland. Some of their children are believed to be Catherine, who married Dennis Boyle; John, who md. Catherine Fisher; an unknown daughter who md. a Mr. McGeehan; Edward, who md. Nancy "Ann" McHugh.
You mention Andrew Brennan who was b. in 1790.Do you know if he had children as named above?Andrew is the earliest ancestor in our Brannan line that has been identified with any certainty. He apparently lived and died in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland, just across the River Finn from Lifford in south County Donegal. He may have lived at one time in Shallogan More, in County Donegal, as that is where his son, Charles, is believed to have been born.I am told that Strabane would have been on the route that emigrants from County Donegal took when departing from Ireland for a new life in America.Andrew is said to have been a grounds keeper for the Marquis of Conyngham.
Can you tell me anything more about this family, or point me to such information?
See my website at www.wheeler-roots.org for more information on my Brannan line. Thanks!
