I am very interested in Ann Coltman's posting on the Winchester/London-South Africa footprint of the Brereton family.I have a fair amount of information on the Breretons of Winchester, England, where I live. This is incidental to an historical research project.I recognise, for example, Captain William Brereton (1728-1795+)for whom there is a memorial in St Marys Church, Kings Worthy, which gives his death as 1806 at West Meon, Hants. (What is the source for his date of birth?) His naval career is well documented. The Rev Thomas B (1686-1752) married a Susannah and they were from St Thomas's church Winchester etc etc. (Where was he born?) Dr John B (1717-1784) was an apothecary and I have seen his letters of administration (where was he born?).His son, another John, was a scholar at Winchester College, and New College, Oxford, and went on to become rector of Alton Barnes, Wilts.Thomas (draper) seems to be the TB who died in 1785 (obit in the Hampshire Chonicle, admin on file)as an upholder or upholsterer. He had at least three children who survived, Mary (1749-1841, buried Kings Worthy), Elizabeth (1750-1819, married Francis Wickham Swanton, see Wikipedia) and Rev Thomas (1759-96), rector of St Michaels Winchester, probably unmarried.I can't place Capt Boulter. My main sources are: local parish registers, the Hampshire Record Office, the Hampshire Chronicle, Winchester College records.I would be glad to give additional information if I have it and would be interested to have your sources.
