Thanks for your response. If it is possible to scan the picture of David's tombstone, I'd appreciate a copy to my direct email. Being Brooks Cemetery certainly adds to his wife being a Brooks.

Below is all I have on John J. Bresee. Since he does not mention a wife nor children in his pension application, I assume any would have died before that 1887 document. Tracking him in census (below) offer some possibilities.

1. JOHN J.6 BRESEE (JEREMIAH5, JOHANNES C.4, CHRISTOPHEL3, ANDRIES2, CHRISTOPHEL1) was born Abt. 1809 in Davenport, Delaware Co. NY, and died Aft. 1887 in MO?.

Notes for JOHN J. BRESEE:
Transcription of John J. Bresee's 1887 Pension application (Civil War) provides his birth place as Davenport, Delaware Co. NY. He was age 77 in the 1887 application so born 1809/1810. He stayed there until 1827, then worked on the canal 1827-1830 then went to a tannery in Otsego Co. NY and farmed one year there Then to Stephenson Co. IL until 1857, then Grand Rapids WI and then Scotland Co. MO near Memphis until war broke out 1861.

His deposition said his father died 1826 in NY when a team (assume horses) ran off with him and his mother died about 12 years ago (so abt. 1875)
Siblings mentioned in his pension application- sister named Elmira CRANDALL who had a son Jeremiah Crandall who thinks now lives in Scotland Co. MO. , younger brothers Nelson (who had lived in Galesburg IL and was 2 years younger) and Phineas (lived in IA in 1868), sister (unnamed) who married David STRAIN in South Wooster NY.

1850 Rock Run Stephenson Co. IL BREESE John J. 41 $400 NY; Elizabeth 7; William 4 IL. In the same house is his mother Melinda 70 CT. Apparently John's wife had died.

1860 This the same John?? P.O. Memphis Harrison Twp. Scotland Co. MO BRASEE- John 53 farmer $75 NY, Mary 37 OH, John M. 19 OH; H.J.S.? (male) 16. Note: Wm. H. Bresee is in a home in Scotland Co. MO between Caleb and Jeremiah CRANDALL's houses.

1870 This him?? Crawford Co. MO BRESEE- J.J. 51 or 61 NY $ 500-$250, Elizabeth 29 housekeeper TN, Sammie or Dannie 7/12 plus 3 young BRYAN children.
Child of JOHN J. BRESEE is:
       i.       WILLIAM H.7 BRESEE, b. 1846, NY.

Note: Wm is not mentioned in his father's pension application.

1850 Wm. H. is in the home of his father John J.
1860 Wm H. is age 14 b. IL in home of a Nancy SASLY? This home is between Caleb and Jeremiah CRANDALL (Wm. H.'s Aunt Almira Bresee m. Caleb Crandall)
1870 Did not find a match
