According to information provided by Cassandra Brewton Otts about 1910 and compiled by her daughter Della Pollard, George Brewton married Catherine Godown in New Jersey. Cassandra Otts, b. 1821 in Spartanburg Co, SC, was thedaughter of William Otts and Delilah Brewton and wife of Franklin Pollard. She also noted that her mother Delilah "was one of the most devout Christians that ever lived" and that Catherine "never weighed over 63 pounds".
Selina Elizabeth Shipp, a daughter of George Shipp and Mary Otts and granddaughter of William Otts and Delilah Brewton, wrote in a 1913 letter that George Brewton was a Revolutionary War soldier. She recalled a family story where during the war Cornwallis and his men, after invading South Carolina, once rode up to the Brewton home place and asked the whereabouts of her husband, at which Catherine replied "He is hunting you." Selina also noted that Catherine's father was a Godown, possibly John Godown.
From the book South Carolina Baptists, 1670-1805 by Leah Townsend: George Brewton was ordained minister of the Tyger River Church of the Broad River Association of South Carolina in June 1803. He was moderator of the Broad River Association in 1812 and died in 1815, with an obituary notice describing him as "an humble Christian, a pious minister, a nursing father in Zion, a good citizen, a loving husband, a tender parent, and a friend to the needy".
