Newton,
Don't know if this will be any help to you, but my great grandfather was William L. Bridwell, the son of William Bridwell. William Bridwell was reportedly born c. 1800 in Virginia. I've had little success in tracking by g-grandfather's ancestors. The best info I've gotten is recollections of a cousin who remembers his father (who was William Aubrey Bridwell, a son of William L. Bridwell) saying, "My father was William; his father was William; and his father was Abraham. Abraham was one of three sons. Only the eldest son had shoes. In the deeps snows of wintertime Virginia, the oldest boy walked ahead and the other boys, with rags on their feet, followed behind." [Note: the quote is from a letter sent by my cousin.]
William L. "Will" Bridwell was one of two sons born to William Bridwell, according to Erbon Wise's book on the Bridwell family. Lafayette died in 1856.
Will Bridwell was born 11/24/1836 in Tennessee. His father William was married to Dobrina Waters. Will's father William reportedly died in 1836, the year Will was born.
Will went on to become a dentist in Metropolis, Illinois. He and his second wife Samatha Matheny had four sons.
Please check to see if this helps provide a connection.
