My name is Rachel Gruhs, I am a Great Grandaughter of Bernhardt Gruhs.

I am unaware of any connection to BRINDLEY.

Bernhardt was born on June 10 1864 near Essen Germany.

His father's name was Anton Gruhs, and his mother was born Theresa Siebers.
Anton died when Bernhardt was very young.

Anton's widow Theresa Gruhs remarried a Heinrich Voss and had five more children:
Heinrich Voss Jnr.
Theresa Voss Jnr
Wilhelm Voss
John Voss
Mary Voss born Nov 8, 1879

Bernhardt left Germany in 1885 at the age of 21 and sailed to America.

He met another German immigrant, named Margeuritea Dorothea Reimer.
(unsure if 1st names spelled correctly.)-

She was born June 6, 1870 in Flensburg, Schlezwig Holstein
<Schlezwig Holstein was Danish Land until it was taken by Germany in 1865>

Her father was Peter Reimer and her mother was
Margaret (born Hansen).
Marguerita Dorothea was the 5th of 7 children:
Anna Katherine Veronica Reimer m. Yurgen Klink
Detlef Peter Reimer
Frederick Karl Reimer
Peter Reimer
Marguerita Dorothea Reimer (m. Bernhardt Gruhs)
Kathrina Reimer (m. Heldt)
Christianna Margreta

Bernhardt Gruhs and Margeurita Dorothea Reimer were married
in the US on April 10th 1890.
They had six children:
John Gruhs born 1891 (name changed to Bruce)
Benjamin Gruhs born 1892 **my paternal grandfather**
Agnes Henrietta Gruhs born 1894 (m. Joseph Milton Williams)
Frank Gruhs born 1898 (name changed to Bruce)
Charles Gruhs born 1904 or 1905 (name changed to Bruce)
George Gruhs born 1914

The family lived in several places in the US (not in order):
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Euclid, Minnesota
Elgin, Oregon
Spokane, Washington
Emmet, Russell and Lewiston, Idaho
and then finally settled in British Columbia Canada

some of the boys changed their last names to Bruce
following discrimination against Germans with WWI.
But none of them had a wife named Brindley

In 1905 Bernhardt returned to Germany for a visit, and then
accompanied his 1/2 sister Mary Voss as she also emmigrated to the US.

In the US, Mary Voss married a man named Joseph Gunther. They had four children:
Joseph Gunther
William Gunther
Helen Gunther born Aug 15 1914 in Idaho, US(m. Preston James Helfrich)
Betty Gunther (m. Burns)

I have some more information for the family tree from this point on,
and am always looking for more and to contact living descendants of
Bernhardt and Margeurita Dorothea Gruhs.

I've run across two connections on to:
Colleen Austin, Great Granddaughter of Agnes Henrietta Williams (Gruhs)
and a connection to the Mary Voss' - Helen Helfrich line - a living Thompson ? ...

but my efforts to contact them have been unsuccesful to date.

I've also been trying to search further in German records
to find a connection to Bernhard Gruhs
or his parents Anton Gruhs, or Theresa Siebers (m. Gruhs / m. Voss).
Bernhardt was born in 1864 ... so his parents might have been born
around the 1840's give or take a few years.

I would love to hear from any relatives.
