Hi Margaret,
1. I've not seen it, but it seems Thomas Brindley had to put his date of birth (10 December 1769) and place of birth (Kent) on his Declaration of intent to be naturalised, which is dated 14 April 1834.
2. As to his death: “…Lately, near New York, aged 67, Thomas Brindley, esq, late of Frinsbury, near Rochester, ship-builder and father of Mr Brindley of Plymouth, naval architect. Mr B. was thrown out of a carriage whist accompanied by a friend, and only survived the accident twenty two hours …” (Woolmer’s Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, Saturday September 10, 1836)
3. The death of his second wife Charlotte was mistakenly reported in the Sydney papers - her death date is unknown -
NOT the “Charlotte Brindley” who died 28 June 1850 (“Empire” & SMH 8/1/52 – both Australian papers got it wrong – declaring her the “relict of Thomas Brindley”) (or d 30 June 1851?) in 77 Spruce St Philadelphia USA, buried Monument cemetery. The Philadelphia Newspaper, (Public Ledger and Daily Transcript), said that a Charlotte Brindley died on 30th June 1851 at 77 Spruce Street and she was 27 years old. She was buried at the Monument Cemetery. This Charlotte was only 27, so not Thomas’ wife!
4. Credit for all this research needs to go to Loris Kingcott, who is soon to publish her book about the Brindleys. She believes Charlotte and Thomas other children born in Philadelphia, but no proof yet.
5. I am also descended from Thomas Brindley and Susannah Haycock, so that makes us 5th cousins!
