Hello everyone, Canterbury calling the wider world of the Britnells........
as promised I have now searched the English and Welsh telephone directories looking for Britnells, my theory being that anywhere which produced a cluster of Britnells is likely to be historically significant;
The bad news is that there are only 171 Britnells listed in the whole of England and Wales, of course there may be others either ex-directory or not on the 'phone, but it looks like there aren't many of us around.
Of the 171 total, 38 turned out to be in Buckinghamshire (Bucks), with 12 in neighbouring Berkshire (Berks), 10 in Hertfordshire (Herts) and 9 in Oxfordshire (Oxon), the other counties directly adjoining Bucks. Greater London has 8, Surrey 9, Lancashire 11 and Kent 10 but nowhere else more than 5, there are 4 in the whole of Wales. Overall the picture is of a family concentrated around Bucks with 88 of the Britnells in Bucks or adjoining counties and the others probably representing no more than family groups who have moved at some time.
I ran Bretnell and Britwell through the computer on some random counties and the group around Bucks to see if it turned up as a surname but I got no hits, it looks as if any mispelling of one or the other that took place was long enough ago for Britnell to become the only form of the name to survive.
If and when I discover any more I'll keep you posted.
