Martha Britten (also have seen Brittin), born in Ireland abt. 1830 married Allen Burtop in Jefferson Co., Pa., probably in abt. 1865, based on their ages and that their oldest child, Mary A. Burtop (later wife of A. Frank Moore) was 4 years old in the 1870 census for Washington Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.
It seems likely that her parents are John and Mary Britten, who appear in the 1870 census as 65 and 66-year-old Irish natives living in Jefferson Co, Pa., Washington Twp.
But if this is true, where is Martha in the 1860 census? Did she have a previous husband? Allen appears single in 1860 at 25-years-old living with his father John Burtop, age 70 and older brother Joseph, 27, again in Washington Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.
But Martha's presumed parents appear without her. Though two younger siblings, John, 16 and Jane, 13, are living at home. Meanwhile, Martha's apparent brothers William, 24, and Joseph, 26, reside next door to the parents.
I notice there is a Martha Morrison, an Irish native of the right age, married to a Robert Morrison in 1860 in the same neighborhood as the Brittens. That particular Robert Morrison doesn't appear to be around in 1870, especially not married to a Martha. One of their children appears as an apprentice carpenter in 1870. So perhaps that's her.
Can anyone shed any light on these families and whether I'm guessing correctly?
By the way, Martha Britten is my ggg-grandmother.
