Mrs. Elizabeth Turley, born about 1683, said to be Elizabeth Semmes Turley, widow of John Turley, was the mother of John, Ann, Paul, James, and Peter Turley, all referred to in later parish records as "former Papists." Peter was born 1710-15. John Turley (Sr) may have been born in Ireland about 1670-80.Elizabeth Semmes was either from England or Maryland, depending on which version is correct.
She married (2nd) about 1715 Maj. John West who died 1716 in Stafford County, Virginia, leaving 1 son by Elizabeth, Col. John West, born about 1716, as well as a grown son also named John West "Sr." whose mother is said by some to have been a native American.Coincidentally, in his will Maj. West leaves a bequest to my ancestor on another line, Mrs. Seith (or Seth) Lucas.
Soon after Maj. West died, 1717, Elizabeth married Capt. Charles Broadwater and had one son, Col. Charles Broadwater (1719-1806). Some show Capt. Broadwater as having another son, Guy Broadwater, by a previous wife.I think Guy must have been Elizabeth's stepson or he probably would have been connected with her in some other record. And since she is believed to have outlived Capt. Broadwater, Guy must be older than his half-brother Col. Charles Broadwater.
Col. John West, son of Maj. John West and Elizabeth (Semmes) Turley West, and half-brother of Col. Charles Broadwater,d. 1777 Fairfax Co., VA.His will was witnessed by Lund Washington, George Washington's third cousin, and in it he refers three times to "my good friend George Washington, Esquire."
Both John West and his half-brother Charles Broadwater served on various juries and committees with George Washington.
On 12-26-1736, the day after Christmas, Peter Turley witnessed a document for his half-brother, Col. John West, in Prince William County, Virginia, in which Col. West gave power of attorney to his wife Mary.Col. West likely was preparing to take a trip.
