Richard, I came across Sam while doing research on my ancestor, Henry Mayes. Northumberland Co. Order Book Abstracts-1652 thru 1657, page 94...
Northumberland County Court 20th July 1657- "It appeareing to the Cort: by the Oathes of THO: GASKIN & SAMLL. BROCKETT, that HENTY MAYES hath paid fower hundred & fifty pounds of tobco: & caske unto THOMAS BREWER out of a Bill of 465 lb. & caske dated the first of March 1655. It is therefore ordered that the said BREWER acquitt & discharge the sd. MAYES of & from the sd. summe of 450 lb. of tobco: and caske out of the sd. Bill & alsoe to pay him all Cort: charges."
