Prussian Brockmeyer Spelling Variations
My gggrandfather and gggrandmother came from prussia to the U.S. in 1875. His name was Wilhelm Heinrich Brockmeier, and hers was Wilhelmina Hohstart Krampe Brockmeier. With them was my ggrandfather Charles Wilhelm Heinrich Brockmeier who was at that time a 7 year old boy. It seems they came through the New York Port Authority and came on to settle in Clay County In. and work in the coal mines there. He already had a job before he left Prussia it seems.
While researching this family I have came across so many variations of the spelling of their surname that I just have to take my mothers word that the one used now is correct.
irregardless of the spelling all the older generation members pronounced the name with a long o sound like book. here are some of the spelling variations:
Brookmeyer, Brookmeier, Brockmire, Brockmeyer, Brockmeier.
Family stories say for our branch of the family Brockmeier is correct.
Another thing is my Brockmeier relatives were not usually Blond haired and blue eyed as most germanic peoples are. they were mostly dark haired and grey eyed. maybe because they were Prussian rather than actually german, I don't know for sure. Thanks for reding and I hope this helps someone.
