James BROGDEN & Susannah FROST

I am a researcher of the BROGDEN line in Alabama and Texas. There is a connection between the BROGDEN line and the FROST line, however. In a posting at the BROGDON forum site, I stated that I would post more on the FROST and the ROBERTS families from which Susanna Frost Medlin Brogden descended. I have a copy of the history book of Madison Co., AL, published in 1998, which is titled: "The Heritage of Madison County, Alabama". On pages 195 & 196 are two articles about Edward Frost and his daughter, Susanna. They were submitted by Don J. Frost of Athens, AL. He notes that the data was compiled from County & State records, census records, Medlin History, Benjamin Frost History, and cemetery tombstones and oral family history. I will be happy to copy the articles for those who wish to have them.

According to the articles, Edward Frost was born abt. 1770 in Bedford Co., VA, and was the son of Rev. John and Francis Frost. He married Amilla Roberts in Washington Co., VA October 3, 1791. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Mary (Benton) Roberts, of Russell Co., VA. Cornelius was killed by Indians in 1788 near the KY and VA border. Following his death, Mary (Benton) Roberts remarried. She married Rev. John Frost. Mary was also said to have been a cousin of Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. Senator and close friend of Andrew Jackson.

Edward Frost and Amilla left Washington Co., VA in 1795 and relocated with others in his family to Knox Co., TN in the area which later became Anderson Co., TN. In 1808 he moved his family south to Chickasaw land and settled along Indian Creek just west of Madison Co., Mississippi Territory. Other relatives of his also moved south and settled nearby. The article expands on several of these cousins and relatives.

Several of Edward's and Amilla's children married in Madison Co., AL. They were Frances Frost who married Joseph Dunaway in 1811; Hannah Frost who married first Marshall Abraham Smalling in 1811; Martha Frost who married Isaac Inman in 1817; Susanna Frost who married Isaac Medlin in 1822; and Snowing Frost who married Susan Oden in 1825. Susan was the daughtr of Hezekiah and Cynthia (Kyle) Oden. Before the Edward Frost family moved to Morgan Co., AL, their son, William, married Lucinda Smith there in 1823. By 1826, Edward and Amilla and their family moved to Morgan Co., AL and resided on 80 acres which Edward purchased. It was here that their daughter Senia married James S. Williams in 1836. Following Edward's death between 1845 and 1850, Amilla remained on the farm until 1859 when she moved to Walker Co., AL near her son, Edward Jr. and Jane. She died there abt 1863.

Susanna Frost was born in 1800 in Knox Co., TN. She and Isaac Medlin had two children: Eliza born in 1823 and Archibald, born in 1825. By 1826, Susanna was a young widow. She moved with her parents to Morgan Co. where she met a neighbor named James BROGDEN. He was much older than she and was a widower with grown children. They married 28 Dec 1826 and had three sons: Lorenzo Dow, James R., and Peter H. Brogden. By 1833, Susanna is a widow once more. The article proceeds to provide information of the years in Alabama. Ultimately, by 1857, Susanna and her grown children moved to Texas in the area just west of Ft. Worth in Young Co. and in Parker Co. It was there that Susanna and one of her sons (Dow), in 1867, were killed by Comanches. Dow's children survived and were raised as orphans at the Medlin ranch belonging to her son Archibald Medlin.

I believe this line ties in with the BROGDEN line which I am researching. I suspect that my line of A B "Buggy" BROGDEN, also of Morgan Co., AL and later of Parker Co., TX, is connected, possibly from that of James BROGDEN's first family. I would appreciate any help in this puzzle. I do have the complete articles and the book on Madison Co. I also have some records on other BROGDEN families from the courthouse records of Morgan Co., AL. I can be reached at either of these two e-mail addresses: [nmh@cptnet.com] or [nmh@cyberport.com].
