This was a cut-and-paste, so it may look a little strange. Several people have given me some info which might modify some of the information contained here. This was sent to my father, Ernest Sommer Brogdon by Vas Hubert Brogdon Jr. of Louisiana. I met Vas Hubert's son and daughter-in-law when I worked at San Antonio's Riverwalk a few years ago.

Some of the information was news to us. Other info, I had to comment on because we knew some things Vas Hubert didn't know. So you will see my comments in places marked with an asterisk and brackets [*]. Some of the older generations I was not able to confirm and don't know where he got the information. The actual line in Texas is listed when you get past all the historical stuff. READ ON:

[*Here's where he begins the Texas line.]

Geneaology of Vas Hubert Brogdon, Jr.

A:       One of 3 brothers left North Carolina and settled in Sumter County, South Carolina. Two brothers went West. [*This must have been my fatherís great-great-great-great-great grandfather. It doesnít say how far West the brothers went. Interesting, because it appears to have been the brother in Sumter Co., S.C. whose descendants came to Texas. Wonder if the other brothers went there first or somewhere else?]

A-A:       Malachi Brogdon, wife Mary Tobias, moved to Sumter Co., South Carolina. A large family of BROGDONS lived at Brogdon, South Carolina. A brother John I. Brogdon (A-B) went to Louisiana. Relation not definitely established.[*This could have been my fatherís great-great-great-great grandfather.]

AA-A:       William Joseph Brogdon married Francis Fly. He went to Alabama circa 1825-30. (4 children 3A-B, D). [*This must have been my fatherís great-great-great-grandfather.]

3A-A:       James Connelly Brogdon, born 3/19.1821. 3 sisters, 3A-B, D. Came to Butler County, Alabama as a boy. Married twice. First to Mary A. Wilson (9 children 4A-A-J). Second Louisa Horton (Wilson-Stallings, Maryís sister (5 children, 4A-K...N). [*See other Alabama information on this forum. Others seem to have this relationship and name nailed down better.] He went to Texas circa 1874-75. Died 6/2/1901.

4A-A:       Lovett B. Brogdon, born 9/10/1851, mother Mary Wilson. Married Sarah Ann Mahalia Moody (Anna) 1/12/1871. Went to Texas by covered wagon. Located near Bryan, Texas. Moved to Houston circa 1895. Operated a boarding house for awhile then moved about 9 miles west of the city on a 5-acre tract at what is now the corner of Brogdon Road and Beinhorn. Later moved about a block away on what is now Beinhorn Rd. (Raised 9 children 5A-A...I) Died 1928 in Houston. [*My father mentioned having relatives in Houston. In fact, he mentioned one incident in particular when, as a child, he visited an aunt there. He ground her glasses up in a nut grinder, whereupon his father thrashed him and bought the old lady new ones!]

5A-A:       Vas Hubert Brogdon, born 2/27/1886 at Bryan, Texas. Died 10/4/1961. Married Alice Lucy Cary 10/16/1912 who was born 10/15/1895, died 1/31/1985, after 89 years. 2 children 6A-A,B. 5AC-A: Elizabeth (Brogdon) Franseen, married Dr. E>F. Franceen, lived in Springfield, Mass. in 1980.

5ACB-A: Oliver Hazard Brogdon III

5A-D:       Ernest Bernard Brogdon (Bern), born 1/1/1879 in Texas, married Well Paterson, lived in Bryan, Texas. Children 5AD-A,E. [*This was my fatherís grandfather. I never heard he went by Bern. I was thinking his wife had been a Potts, but I could be wrong. However, my mother mentioned she was of Scottish descent, and I looked up the name Paterson, and sure enough! We were estranged from my father's family, but I met this couple when I was a small child. They were wonderful people and the main Brogdons of my memory.]

5AD-A: Chalmers Brogdon, 1 son Chalmers.[*This is not quite right. Ernest Chalmers Brogdon is the full name here and he was my father's father. I never heard that he went by Chalmers. He had my father by his first wife, Louise Elizabeth Sommer, whom he married June 18, but I don't know the year. They separated when my father, Ernest Sommer Brogdon, was about 10. My father was about 12 when his father married a second time to Lillian Pederson by whom he had a second son, Charles Edward Brogdon (whom I have never seen).]

[*HERE'S MY PERSONAL ASIDE STORY IF YOU CARE TO READ IT...
I lived three blocks from my grandfather, Ernest Chalmers, but never met him. My father was turned away from the family because his father's second wife wouldn't accept him (to put it mildly). She did everything she could to make the world and the family forget my dad existed. A shame because my dad and his dad were extremely close until then.

My grandfather and father saw each other on the sly maybe three times after that. I recall a small prayer book that was in our home for years which my father received from his father at about age 17 when he went into the Marines. It had a little note written and was signed with love from his dad. My dad did show up at the house unannounced when his dad was dying -- Good for him!!!

I just want everyone to know my dad, Ernest Sommer Brogdon, had a father who was Ernest Chalmers Brogdon. The rejection ruined my dad's life, honest to god. He died in Nov. 1998 at the age of 70, a broken man. He deserves to be recognized as the son of his father in death if not in life....I will not forget and, please, none of you forget him either. END OF OUR STORY]

5AD-B: Juanita (Brogdon) Kousal, Married Fred Kousal, 1 daughter Rita Joy.[*I recall this relationship better now than when I posted the genealogy on the "Brogdon forum". Rita was my dad's cousin and a schoolmate of my mom's. She had a daughter named Pam Mosley (sp.?) and another daughter later on whose name I don't recall. Pam had two sons that I remember. They were the only people on this side I knew halfway well. Pam was the best friend of my dad's half-sister.]

5AD-C: Ernest Bernard Brogdon, Jr. (Happy) [*This is the uncle my father remembers moving to California and starting a roofing company. Maybe he is Daphne Brogdon's relative (she's the one on TV). I did not know he was another Ernest-- have no idea if this is accurate.]

5AD-D: Dell Brogdon

5AD-E: Marie Brogdon [*I barely knew her. She was my grandmother's ex-sister-in-law and they remained friends until the end. I was racking my brains and now I remember she was married to a man named Elwood Eucker (pronounced YOO-ker--I think the spelling's right). This is an update from what was posted on the "Brogdon forum" so it's more accurate.]

5A-E: Leduska Beatrice (Brogdon) Waltman (Duck), born 4/3/1880 in Texas, married Frank P. Waltman. 2 children, Thelma and son Billy, who was killed in an accident.

5A-F: Vivien R. Brogdon (Viv), born 3/25/1884 in Texas. Married Jessie Lumbadon, no children.

5A-G: Fannie Lucy (Brogdon) Blackwell, born 5/15/1888, married Preston Blackwell, 2 children, 5AG-A,B.

5AG-A: Helen Blackwell

5AG-B: Ana Vieve (Blackwell) Love, 1 daughter, Sandy

5A-H: John Theopolis Brogdon, born 4/2/1891 in Texas, married Margaret Wilcox, 3 children 5AH-A,C.

5AH-A: John Treadway Brogdon, wife Beverley, died 1992. 3 children 5AHA-A,C.

5AHA-A: John Treadway Brogdon, Jr. Minister, born 10/23/46, married Mary Park Glasson. One adopted son Matthieu Treadway.

[*So, in a nutshell, here appears to be my line in descending generations:

1. Brogdons in Wayne Co., North Carolina.
2. One of three brothers who went to Sumter, South Carolina.
3. Malachi Brogdon of Brogdon, South Carolina.
4. William Joseph Brogdon, who went to Alabama.
5. James Connelly Brogdon, of Alabama.
6. Lovett B. Brogdon, who moved to Bryan, Texas.
7. Ernest Bernard Brogdon, of Bryan, Texas.
8. Ernest Chalmers Brogdon, of Waco, Texas.
9. Ernest Sommer Brogdon, of Waco, moved to San Antonio.
10. My brothers and me -- Lonnie Carl Brogdon, David Ernest Brogdon, and Kathryn Lurose Brogdon (Merritt).
11. My kids -- Carmen Marisa Merritt and Ian Thomas Merritt of San Antonio and they have no cousins.]
