Pat, most any genealogical library will have the early Wayne Co. NC censuses for you. Here's some other source information from my notes about Pierce Brogden:

!SOURCE: (1) Will of Pierce BROGDEN, Wayne Co. in NC State Archives.
(2) Wayne Co., NC cemeteries, p. 252.

Will is dated 31 July 1854 and probated by Aug. Court 1854. It names wife as Amy; sons as Curtis H. (the eldest), Thomas W, William R., Nathan P., Willis H., and John W. (Willis and John named as two youngest sons); and daughter as Nancy Maria Bass. Exr: Jesse Hollowell, Wit: John Hollowell and Nathan Brogden.

DEATH: At age 64. According to his tombstone, his last words were "Glory, glory to the Lord."

BURIAL: At Brogden Cemetery which is near Bill Bizzell's in Wayne Co. NC.

"Minutes of Wayne Co. NC, May Term 1833." NCGSJ, May 1987 pg. 67:
