BRONCK of Hudson River Valley, NY, 1700's
I'm not a BRONCK researcher but have information from the 1929 book "Dutch Houses in the Hudson River Valley to 1776" which lists many members of the BRONCK family, early Dutch settlers. The earliest settler was JONAS BRONCK who purchased a tract of land from the Indians in 1861, which resulted in today's borough of NY City called the Bronx.According to the book, JONAS BRONCK was a Dane, a man of means, who came to New Amsterdam in 18639, bringing with him his family, servants, and personal property. He bult a house which he called Emmaus, on a site ner the Harlem River station of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, but he died in 1643.His widow, ANTONIA SLAGHBOOM, a Dutch woman, woon married ARENT VAN CURLER, a relative of the patroon of Rensselaerswyck, and who was in 1662 the founder of Schenectady.Antonia had a son PIETER BRONCK, who later conducted a brewery in Beverwyck. In November 1661, Pieter mortgaged his brewhouse for 2272 Carolus guilders and two months later, on January 13, 1662, spent his money to buy land from the Indiana south of Beverwyck.Pieter Bronck died in 1669.His house was owned in 1926 by Pieter's descendant, Leonard Bronck Lampman of NY City.Pieter's son, JAN BRONCK (born 1652, died 1742) inherited the farm and from him the property passed in the male line for four generations to LEONARD BRONCK (born 1797, died 1872), the grandfather of the present owner.(The book goes on to some extent about this family, and speaks of the following BRONCK family members:Adelaide, Anna, Antonia, Catryntje, Commertje, Elsie, Hilletje, Jan, Jan Jonas, Jan L., Jonas, Leonard, Maria Ely, Pieter.
