Hi, In trying to help my daughter research her husband's family, we have come upon the Brookins name. Panola Co, TX marriage records show that Elmira Brookins married William F. Carter, Mar 9, 1869. The 1870 Panola Co TX census shows Wm, age 27, and "Lavenia", age 20. Living next door is C. Bookins, widow 50, female, b LA, with son, Edwin, 16, b LA. Lavenia Carter is also shown b LA. Backing up, the 1860 De Soto Parish, LA, which joins Panola Co, TX, shows Caroline Broklin, widow 40, b SC as HOH. Children listed are: Lavena,14; James, 12; Edward, 6; and Washington, 2. The 1880 Panola Co TX census shows a Careline Carter, widow, age 59, b GA, living in the William Carter household as his mother-in-law. Can anyone help untangle this? Was C. Bookins, Caroline Broklin and Careline Carter the same person? Her age is as consistent as you're likely to get off census records. The marriage record is for Elmira Brookins and it seems likely that Elmira was her first name and she perferred Lavenia, which is the way it is on all census records. I think Lavena Broklin of 1860 is the same Lavenia Carter in 1870. My son-in-law's grandmother, who was a Carter, says her grandmother was a Brookins. Does anyone know who Caroline was married to and her maiden name? Thanks, Loretta Notify Administrator about this message?
