Did the 2 ancestors marry in America? If yes, than the church marriage record should have a place of birth and parents names. Possible your ancestor change the spelling when he was naturalized citizen.

Russia has nothing to do with your research. It just suggest that the clerk heard Russian but actually it was Rusyn/Ruthenian - Byzantine Catholic.
