I don't know if you can help me, but my husband's grandmother, Mamie E. McCLAIN (b1882 d1959), married 1) Benjamin Franklin SCOTT (b1873 d1957) on May 2 1898 in Kansas City, MO -- they were divorced in 1909, and married 2) Joseph Edward BROPHY (b1870 d 1946) between 1911-1919.
I have been unable to find Mamie's and Joseph's marriage license in the surrounding Kansas City area.City directories show Joseph's name as Edward J., Joseph E., so I really do not know which is the correct order of the first and middle name.
Complicating matters is that Mamie showed his name on the death certificate as Joseph Broviak BROPHY.This is the first we run across "Broviak" anywhere in the name.Joesph was a produce salesman and is believed to have immigrated with his parents from Germany in 1881.Mamie shows Joseph's father's name as Vincent BROPHY.
Since BROPHY does not appear to be a "German" surname, I was wondering if "BROVIAK" was the original surname and it was changed during immigration to BROPHY.
Do you have any information which might help me?
