My guess is that John Letcher Bruffy is related to the Bruffeys who were in Missouri before the Civil War. The John Bruffey who moved from Western Virginia to Missouri then to Lawrence Co Illinois had 12 children, none named John Letcher or John L. He later moved to Texas. Bruffey cousins of his named Bradford Barton and Murray each had sons named John born around 1860, but dates don't line up with the John in your family Bible, and it appears they died in W. Va.
