The Rev. John Bryce had a most interesting career in law and politics as well as the ministry. He served churches in Richmond,Va,Fredericksburg,Va, Alexandria (then DC, now Va) in Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana. He founded First Baptist in Shreveport, La and served as mayor of that city.Rumor has it that he was President Tyler's personnel spy on the Texas border. He served in the Indiana legislature and ran for Congress from that state.John Spence's "History of Kentucky Baptists 1769 -1883" mentions that the Rev. Bryce had five wives.I believe them to be:
Ann Gordon married 8 June 1805 in Goochland County, Va, niece of George Woodson Payne. She was the orphan of James and Ann Payne Gordon of Lancaster County, Va and cousin of my g-g-g-grandfather.
Your Sophia McDaniel (daughter of William McDaniel) married on 25 June 1811 in Richmond, Va.
Louisa S. B. Care of Port Royal, Va (near Fredericksburg) married 1821.Had a daughter Sarah C. B. Bryce.
Lucinda I. Norris married 6 December 1823 at Centreville, Fairfax County, Va (near Alexandria).
Fifth wife is given in history of First Baptist Church, Shreveport, La which I don't currently have with me.I believe they met in Kentucky in the late 1820s and that she survived him when he died in Ky on July 22.1864.
