The airman in the article is my uncle, Otto W. Buenting who served as a pilot in the Pacific during WWII. He flew bombing missions over Japan. During one of these he was attacked by enemy planes. He managed to fight them off, although his plane was seriously damaged. He limped to Chinese skies, made an emergency landing, and was smuggled out by friendly Chinese. All his crew were safe, and credited their survival to his skill.

After the war, Otto was given the honor of flying the Japanese surrender papers home from Japan to Washington.

His father was the Otto W. Buenting that has been mentioned. He was born in 1873 in Kansas. He was chosen by his German grandmother to go to Germany to receive several years of education. When he returned, he worked his way through Purdue, and married Harriet in 1913. Otto and Harriet had 4 children, Elizabeth (my mother), Otto, Robert and Harriet. Otto Sr. worked for his whole career at Union Switch and Signal in Pittsburgh, where he became a Vice President. He was deeply loved by the workers under him.

All the children are dead now except my Uncle Robert(now 88) and his wife. There are 9 of us in the next generation.

FYI there is a "Buenting reunion" planned in W. Palm Beach Fla in July 2007.

Please let me know if you would like more information on this branch of the Buenting family
