Native American heritage?

Hi, I was wondering whether anyone can confirm that the Buffaloe/Buffalo name was a Native American name? I descend from the line of Oscar Lee Buffalo and Rachel Edna Crager, and I have been told that it is a Native American name, specifically Cherokee. Any information that can be provided would be welcome!
