I was told by a Native American Historian that it is "possibly" Indian/French. There was an intermarriage of an officer and native woman during the French Indian War. Their family went by that last name.

Though I have also looked under immigration charts and name changes. That last name was changed from Buffalini or Buffalino during immigration of many Italian Mafia members.
