I wonder if someone can help me. My great-grandfather's name was Henry James Skipper and from info found on 1871-1901 census his birth was c 1859. Unfortunately I could never find a birth record for him. In fact the only info I could find for his parents and siblings was on the 1871 census where they are living at 7 Henley St. Battersea. His father was George a bricklayer and his mother Maryann, both born in Norwich, Henry was born in Islington and some of his siblings were also born there but the 1st three were born in Norwich. However, I think I've now found the family on the censuses for 1851, 1861, 1881 - but under the surname BUGG, all the name, birth info, occupation agrees with the family shown as Skipper in 1871. So it appears they changed their name at the time of the 1871 census but it was back to BUGG by 1881. Henry James was now married and retained the name Skipper. Armed with this info I could now find a birth record under the name Henry James Bugg, likewise for all his siblings.
What I would like to know is what prompted the change of name - Does anyone with Bugg connections have an idea !!!
